Music Marketing Strategies -vs- Campaigns

Music Marketing Logo As you begin your journey and dig into the resources offered here on I am MUSIC Network is important that you understand some of the basics of music marketing - primarily that there is a huge difference between music marketing strategies and music marketing campaigns.

Campaigns

An independent music marketing campaign is the over all plan - from start to finish - of how you will market your music to potential fans, industry professionals, and beyond. A campaign is made up of individual strategies that all work hand and hand to accomplish the over all goal of a campaign. An example of a campaign goal would be to sell 100,000 units (CDs) within a six month period. Your campaign would then need to be created to reach this goal by utilizing many individual strategies with each one contributing to the success of the entire campaign.

Individual Strategies

An individual strategy is a very specific action taken to get your music and brand in front of potential fans and is only a portion of your entire music marketing campaign. One strategy does not have the marketing reach nor the industry penetration needed to sustain buzz, create continued awareness, or increase demand alone. Many music marketing strategies are used together to create successful campaigns. An example of an individual strategy goal would be to increase social networking activity by fifty fans per day. Your strategy would then need to be created to actually increase your fan activity - with the final result being increased awareness of your music that leads to increased unit (CD) sales and ultimately helping you reach your campaign goal of selling 100,000 units (CDs) within six months.

These are two very different music marketing concepts that if over looked can cause you a lot of pain, frustration, and needless expense. The only way to really get your music in the hands of fans, taste-makers, and music industry decision makers is to start with a goal, create a campaign that utilizes individual strategies, track your efforts/actions, and adjust your strategies as needed to get you better results and ultimately lead you to your goal.

Planning is the Key to Successful Music Marketing Campaigns

The biggest mistake you can make when starting your music marketing journey is to act before you plan a campaign. Success does not come from simply trying this or that until you find a strategy that works and then stick with it. You may stumble upon something that works for a minute - but the time, effort, and money spent will cost you far more than if you take the time to set goals and plan for successfully reaching those goals. It's a hard thing to do - waiting to start marketing your music - because as soon as you start your efforts you get to see if fans are into the music!

Your dream is about fans buying your music, fans demanding your live shows in their communities, DJs playing your music, and watching the press and media talk about you and your music. You want all this so you can make a living as an independent artist and be appreciated for your musical contribution to society. The only problem with this dream is that if you act before you plan you can seriously hurt your chances of having any of it! Harsh - yes - but very, very true. Taking the wrong marketing steps at the wrong time is almost as bad as not doing anything to market your music in the first place. Not knowing if what you are doing is working is right up there with the biggest mistakes you can make in music marketing as well. The only way you know what to do, when to do it, how to do it, where to do it, or if it is working is to start with a plan, act upon that plan, review your efforts for effectiveness, and adjust actions to further your awareness and reach according to your planned goals.
